On The Ecological Unconscious and Solastalgia

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/31/magazine/31ecopsych-t.html

I am a fan of E.O. Wilson’s Biophilia hypothesis and I strongly believe that we are hard-wired to have negative reactions to environmental destruction. Environmental destruction would have been a threat to our ancestors’ survival and therefore we should have come to see it as a bad thing over time. To what extent we can consider damage to be truly threatening has likely changed given how globalization has widened our view of “existence”, but the assumption that we subconsciously (and consciously) react to news of environmental  destruction can only be attributed to the generation of these reactions in the human psyche.  An interesting article worth a read.
